Andy and The Apple Tree

applesAndy stopped by late last night, Andy is my direct Amish neighbor. Our property lines connect. Usually, when Andy comes-a-calling, he wants something. Well, here it was 7:00 pm and I’m already down for the night. I’d taken off my bra, put on my checkered-a-size-to-big-boxers and a bit too-tight-t-shirt. I let my hair down and took my make-up off and I’m all ready to bunker down for the night, when the dog starts barking like mad.

Any-who, here I am bra-less and standing on the porch cross-armed talking to my Amish neighbor! Why do they always come at the most inappropriate times? Even my family calls first! (I know you don’t have a phone Andy, but here’s an idea… Come over, leave a note on my door announcing you’ll be stopping by tomorrow at such and such a time)! Geez, at least give me time to put on a freaking bra![clear]

So, his wife Pauline wanted to make applesauce, and in order to do that they wanted some of the apples off of our apple tree. Here’s the thing, while I love my Amish neighbors, they are more takers than givers! So, I tell Andy, “I”ll make you a deal Andy, get me your wives white bread recipe and you can have some apples off our tree”! Hehehe, yup I really said that to him.[clear]

It worked, the next night, again unannounced Andy shows up with recipe and two-buckets in hand. I guess he really wanted those apples. The next day, I made Pauline’s Amish White Bread and it’s to die for![clear]

Hubby took a loaf to work with him, as the recipe makes three loaves and that is way more than we can eat before it turns to mold! The guys at work loved it.[clear]

So, here’s the real kicker, remember I said that my Amish neighbors are more takers than givers? Well, here I am putting all the ingredients together for Pauline’s Amish White Bread, and I realized there’s no instructions, just ingredients! WITH A NOTE AT THE BOTTOM THAT READ “I like to use Seal of Minnesota Flour and the Red Star Instant yeast. If you want I can let you know where I buy the yeast and flour…Stop in! Your neighbor, Pauline”[clear]

Ok, well since there were no instruction on the making of the bread, no bake time, now temperature settings and it didn’t tell me how many loaves it made, I had to go over to Pauline’s and get the rest of the information.[clear]

So… I’m sitting at the table in Pauline’s house with her two oldest daughters, and her youngest son and we’re talking about the bread and what I need to do to make it. When out of nowhere Pauline starts talking about the brand of flour and yeast and proceeds to tell me she get’s it at the Bulk Store over in the next town. Then she says, “When you go, let me know I could use a ride”.[clear]

Yup, you guessed it, the missing instructions on the recipe card were an all out ploy to get a ride to the bulk store.[clear]

Gotta love them neighbors!

Mary, I’m sure not all Amish are takers rather than givers. Just my neighbor Andy is more of a taker than a giver. ๐Ÿ™‚ I love my Amish neighbors. But to be honest, there are some very funny stories to tell. ๐Ÿ™‚

Rofl that is hysterical! We have a Mennonite owned restaurant here & their food is delicious! Of course their bread is very very popular item. Thankfully it is a buffet style restaurant so you get to taste a little of everything and it is all to die for!

TawndaM we help our Amish neighbors everyday. They are VERY needy even though most people don’t think that way. This is the first time I’ve ever asked them for anything. They ask us for something on a weekly basis. I don’t mind helping them. In fact, I love them dearly, it just cracks me up sometimes.

We had neighbors like this in our last neighborhood – they weren’t Amish though. Ironically, I subscribed to a state magazine called Our Wisconsin (I live in Green Bay) and one of the recurring articles is written by an Amish family. It shares a week from their lives. How sweet it is, and I bet the Amish desserts and goodies you share with your neighbors and the trust you develop from having such neighbors will be great in the future, and if all it costs you to have a friendly neighbor is a ride to town every once in a while the better it is for you and your family to enjoy life and your neighbors. I have lived in neighborhoods where I did not even trust the dogs let alone neighbors, so enjoy life..And I wish I had some of that bread.

That is hilarious! I have to say, though, that I am JEALOUS ! We live in a classic suburb, our neighbors barely look at us, let alone talk to us. Occasionally we get a sideways glare from the elderly man across the way, but that’s about it. They’re all probably upset about our untrimmed trees, or perhaps that our roof color doesn’t match the paint on the house…who knows. Anyway, I’d LOVE to have a neighbor who came to call, even if it were just to ask for something…and a neighbor with amazing recipes to share? Even better!

      Shawna,

It’s true the Amish live a simple life, sometimes I feel a sense of need for that as well. But, they also live a hard life. I see the elders out there walking miles to wherever it is they are going, I see them out plowing and tilling by horse, (not all) some of them use gas. It just depends on their Bishop I guess and what they can and can’t do. But anyway, you’re right our kids will never know the simple things in life that most of use grew up with before technology. That’s sad really.

When I was a teen, my dad had a summer “cottage” on a lake in norther NY. There were several Amish families in the vicinity. They were the local experts on everything from livestock to baking, and really friendly. One family sold beautiful furniture and wooden structures and they always had white bread and fresh butter for guests. Thanks for the memory ๐Ÿ™‚

My mom made us 9 kids and my dad bread every. single. day. We’d get off the bus and walk our 3/4 mile driveway home to the smell of it. And run like all get out to be the first ones home to get home to butter up the heals. Yes, we went through 2 loaves a just for dinner (what we called “supper’ back then, but now we have been declared city people and say dinner) HOW does lunch take over dinner, and dinner takes over supper? Good thing we still call it breakfast. i’d be all mixed up). Thanks for the recipe. I have tried my mom’s bread “recipe’ but it is mostly pinches and handfuls. My youngest wants to try it!

Clever way of getting needs met. but so funny!

      Ah Ha Eileen Richter,

Yup we called it super and dinner for lunch too. I remember my dad cooking a big Sunday dinner every week and we’d run home too. That’s funny the memories we have from back in the day. Life has changed so much, I don’t think our kiddos will have the same type of memories we have. And to me that is sad. However, my kiddos have experienced super with the Amish, and boy do I plan to write about that next!

That is a great story. I have noticed when shopping at Amish stores they prices are higher for the same things as other stores. I know a lot of people like to buy their bakery. I don’t. I went with my mother-in-law about a year ago to one and saw one of the girls frosting a cake and licking the knife and probably everything else. Just stick with the recipes.

It’s funny you mentioned this. I know what you’re saying. Yes the prices are higher. One thing I noticed too is the bulk it NOT factory made but looks like it was packaged in their own homes. I went to buy cheese and noticed almost all the cheese had mold on it. I know cheese is mold, but i don’t want to eat green mold on my cheese. It grossed me out. I can’t shop there either.

Ok, I admit I came a callin’ as a taker also, looking for something quick to comment on so i could put that i commented for a giveaway. But, I enjoyed your story so much I feel bad now. =) Well, Ok, not so bad but I wish I had a story to share in return. The only thing I can think of is this: My Granny has lived in the same house on the same land for over 65 years and she knows everyone in the area as she was a headstart teacher. She is beloved by the county she lives in today. Your story about your Amish neighbors reminds me of her and all of her neighbors but she never saw it as them being takers and now she is old and feeble and all of those gifts she gave out in the form of food and money and trips, well it is coming back to her now in the form of rides, food, porches, and other joys for her last years of her life. She doesn’t understand why people want to do things for her so badly but I do, she gave of her self without remorse and now her neighbors are returning the favor.

Maybe, someday your neighbors will joyfully do the same for you.

    Thank you for the story,

    Melissa

When I lived in southern Indiana I had about 20 Amish men show up at my backdoor…after dark…with rifles. I was 15 at the time and my grandparents had “gone to town.”

Anyway, they wanted to know if they could shoot the birds in the barn for hunting practice. Although we rented the house, the barn and property were still used by the landlord.

    I said, “Uh, no.”

Sneaky, sneaky! Though, I have to admit, I can kind of sympathize with the desire to get a ride when possible. I either have to walk many miles (often with rather heavy loads), take the bus, or find an off-hour that friends or family can get me to where I’m going. Maybe I should lure them with my grandma’s super-secret apple pie recipe….

Gave me a chuckle — but I wonder if all Amish are takers, rather than givers? Doubt they think about it in this way — they help other Amish perhaps, but ‘the English’ they’re more careful of? But you got the recipe! they got apples and a ride. everyone happy.

I live in a community where there a lot of Amish. They may be takers to some extent but they are also givers in their own way. They are very industrious and work hard. The goods they supply to the community are some of the best. High quality for sometime very low prices. It definitely boosts our community.

Haha, sounds like my dad’s Amish neighbors. They were always wanting a ride to Bowling Green, KY which is a couple of hours away from where he lives. He would give them a ride but they never offered gas money. They even asked him to pay $10 an hour to have one of their kids help dad clean the garage. Not very neighborly if you ask me.

Great story! I live in Pa, and am surrounded by Amish. I buy most of my wooden furniture from them. You can’t find furniture of great quality, and affordability in the furniture stores around here. My daughters bunk beds were 4100 more than what the local big box stores were, but the quality is so great that they will last forever. I do find it interesting how the amish are against anything modern, but they can ride in cars. Also ours have phones, but have to keep them in a little shelter on the edge of their property. I don’t know, to each his own I guess.

LOL! Im so happy that I can across your blog- it’s one I can really relate too! My boyfriend actually works doing construction with a group of Amish men. You’re comment that they’re “more takers than givers” really rings true to me- seems like they are constantly asking for rides to here or there or expecting him to go beyond his job description to make up for their lack of more modern things (I’m pretty sure there’s more calls made from his cell phone by his Amish co-workers than there is made by him!) Not exactly what I pictured when I thought of them before we began dealing with them regularly lol

OMG! We have a farm in southern Illinois and we have tons of blackberries. The Amish keep bothering us for our blackberries. Never will we allow them on the property because it’ll never stop. They’re smart and resourceful! Loved your story and the bread recipe too!

Your story made me chuckle. I don’t have amish neighbors but I have a few that are “takers”.I was super humored how they used that recipe to both get the apples and the ride (but sounds like the bread was worth both in the end ๐Ÿ˜‰ LOL

Thank you for sharing the Amish bread recipe. I am sorry that your neighbors are takers, but maybe if you confronted them with it or made more demands of your own it would be more of a bartering system instead of just taking. After all it worked with you getting the bread recipe.

that was sure an awful lot for bread and applesauce! But, I’m sure they both tasted yummy and the next time you make it, you could probly put in least one in the freezer and save money on buying more bread
