Up Close and Personal-Winter Farming

It’s been a crazy winter here. We’ve already received over 40″ of snow and it’s snowing again today. Unfortunately, farming never stops for Mother Nature. This batch of pigs are seeing snow for the first time. They’re not sure what to do. But, they finally came out of the barn when I enter the pen and began to explore. And tried munching on my boots.

pigs first winter in snowIt was snowing pretty heavy so this picture isn’t the greatest. The pigs are so funny. They just want to know what all the white stuff is and where is their food!

While hubby and I are taken care of the farm, our Amish neighbors are doing laundry!

And some of them want to know if the snow will ever end!

I on the other hand get to plow mounds of snow.

And… throw a few snowballs at farmer Joe.

Farmer Joe and I drove to town to pick up a few things.

And as usual was stopped by a train.

I take my camera with me everywhere I go. I love taking pictures of old barns.

Almost everywhere you look around here you’ll find a windmill. Even our internet is powered by a windmill.

And then here I am dreaming of spring and gardening.

Living life in the country hasn’t always been my thing. I’m a city girl, born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. When I was a kid, even a young adult I used to think I was born into the wrong family. I always thought I should have been born into a country family. That is, until I moved to the country. I nearly went stir crazy my first two-years out in the middle of all these cornfields. And then, one day I woke up and I felt at home. It’s crazy how our priorities change as we grow. I can’t image living my life any other way! However, there are times when I’m envious of those that live in NYC, Chicago and LA!

I hope you enjoyed this little look into my life. I’ll be doing an entire serious on Up Close And Personal this year. Let me know if there’s anything you’d really like to see or know about me, Amish life, Country Living, Farming, Cooking, and the like. I’ll do my best to answer all your questions.

I grew up in the country too and I miss it so much. I love the sign “Hickville”, haha!

I love your pictures especially the ones of the pigs and you in your boots! We haven’t seen much snow this year — we had a day of it and my daughter absolutely loved it! I think she would love to be where you are right now and roll around in all that white stuff.

I just love reading about your adventures. I secretly always wanted to grow up in an Amish community. I love the closeness and living off the land and the focus is family. Just a great way for kids to grow up. Thanks for sharing:)

Hi there, I just stopped by from the list of website on the SITS girls Facebook page. I don’t think they’ve announced a “winner” for the critique yet, but I just had to comment and tell you how much I really love your blogsite! So clean, and organized, and interesting things to read. I’ll be back!

Love the pictures and your blog. What a cute banner you have. We live in St Louis and always want
to move outside of it and get three or five acres. My husband grew up on a working farm and really misses it. Stay warm!

So interesting to see! With the weather we have been having, I am very grateful I am not a farmer who must go out in it to tend to animals!

There is a growing Amish community where my in-laws live and it’s always fun to catch little glimpses of how they live. What a great opportunity you have to learn a different way of life!

Very pretty pictures! How on earth do they dry their laundry outside in the winter – freeze it and bring it in? It’s so interesting to see your pictures of the Amish community. Just have to two, you, my 2yo was looking over my shoulder and saw the last picture of you and said, “aww she’s so cute” – 2yos say the cutest things! He also used the phrase “just my luck” the other day – funny kid. Stopping by from SITS!
